A Dialogue with Leaders in the Disability Community on Voting Accessibility and Security

Just days ahead of the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the EAC’s four Commissioners met with members of the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) for a pre-conference session on accessibility and security in the voting process. EAC Providing Valuable Support for Election Officials, Voters Ahead of 2020 Elections

In recent weeks, EAC Commissioners and staff have packed their bags and crisscrossed the nation to participate in conferences hosted by state and local election officials, as well as national gatherings of the National Association of Secretaries of State, the National Association of State Election Directors, the National Association of Counties and the International Association of Government Officials. Election security has been top of mind for election officials since the 2016 elections, and efforts are well underway to strengthen election infrastructure for the 2020 elections and beyond. Sneak Peek: 2019 Election Data Summit and 2018 EAVS Report

EAC staff is working diligently on final preparations for our 2019 Election Data Summit. This year, the Election Data Summit will be hosted in the Senate Rules Committee Room in the Russell Senate Office Building on June 27, 2019. Earlier today, the U.S. Census Bureau released its key findings on voting and registration for the November 2018 general elections, as well as the accompanying dataset. The Census Bureau collects this data every two years following each federal general election through its Voting and Registration Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS).

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, there are nearly 26 million people in the U.S with limited English proficiency and more than 66 millions who speak a language other than English at home. Such individuals can face challenges when attempting to register to vote and cast a ballot. The EAC is pleased to announce our newest resources that seek to strengthen language accessibility and help election officials serve voters with language needs.

A hundred years ago, Congress passed the 19th amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. It took another year for the States to ratify the amendment, and it radically changed the makeup of our American electorate. Just a month ago, in his State of the Union Address, the President stated to great cheers and chants of “USA! EAC’s 2018 Clearinghouse Awards: Sharing Best Practices in Election Administration

The EAC announced the winners of our 2018 Clearinghouse Awards for Best Practices in Election Administration. The awards, also known as the Clearies, provide election offices across America an opportunity to share their innovative efforts and celebrate successes. The Clearies play an important role in furthering the EAC’s responsibilities under the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). Under that act, the EAC serves as a clearinghouse for election administration information.

Launch of the 2018 EAVS and New Resources

With the midterm elections now behind us, the EAC has begun implementing the 2018 Election Administration and Voting Survey (EAVS). The EAVS is the agency’s biennial survey that collects the most comprehensive nationwide data on election administration from nearly 6,500 local election jurisdictions across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
