Commissioners Celebrate Historic Moment in Women Suffrage

Statement

Silver Spring, Md. – Today, U.S. Election Assistance Commission Chairwoman Christy McCormick, Vice Chair Ben Hovland, Commissioner Thomas Hicks, and Commissioner Donald Palmer issued the following statement celebrating this week’s 100th anniversary of the U.S. House of Representatives affirmative vote to grant women the right to vote:

“This week marks the first centennial milestone as we approach next year’s 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives voted to support the measure that was ratified in August 1920 and became law. Rooted in the efforts of suffragettes such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony, the 19th Amendment provided a strong foundation for the important role women continue to play in modern elections. From casting ballots and running for office to counting ballots and running the elections, women are leaders in our nation’s democracy. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission looks forward to celebrating the successes of the suffragette movement throughout the coming year and as the 2020 Presidential Election approaches.”
