New Voting System Guidelines, Disaster Preparedness, Election Security Shape Agenda
Silver Spring, Md. – Members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s (EAC) Standards Board will meet in Memphis from April 11-12 to discuss election security, the next generation of voluntary voting system guidelines testing requirements, disaster management and recovery, as well as election law. The event will feature presentations from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Standards and Technology, election officials from across the nation and EAC staff. It will also include a Voting Rights Act training for members that will take place at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel.
The EAC Standards Board meeting in Memphis takes place as news coverage focuses on how best to prepare for the 2020 Presidential Election, including how to ensure election integrity, shore up security, address aging voting equipment and protect the right of every eligible American to vote privately and independently. The Standards Board meeting will include robust conversations regarding each of these topics, as well as other aspects of the EAC’s mission as mandated by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA).
The EAC Standards Board was established under HAVA and is comprised of 110 state and local election leaders representing each state and U.S. territory. Among its members are 55 state election officials selected by their respective chief state election official, and 55 local election officials selected through a process supervised by the chief state election official. HAVA prohibits any two members representing the same state to be members of the same political party.
