EAC Spotlight: Ohio Secretary of State’s Office

Increasingly, the EAC hears about all kinds of new and innovative initiatives taking place in state and local election offices. The more we hear, the more we thought it would be nice to highlight them and share them with everyone.  If you are a state or local election official and have implemented new or innovative programs, projects, pilots, etc. – we would love to hear from you, too! Military Ready to Vote (MRV)

Recently, the Ohio Secretary of State’s office designed the Military Ready to Vote (MRV) brochure. This brochure is designed to make the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) process easier from start to finish.  The brochure contains an FPCA form, instructions, key dates, and guidance on relevant laws. Additionally, the FPCA provided in the brochure is a self-contained return mailer that does not require additional postage to return it to the Secretary of State’s Office. Ohio is distributing the MRV’s at military centers, military bases, deployments and boot camps. Ballot Box Bulletin

In 2011, the Secretary of State’s office created a Precinct Election Official newsletter that is sent out to all pollworkers who provide contact information and is also available on the Secretary’s website. The newsletter, Ballot Box Bulletin, focuses on election administration information, reminders, and highlights exceptional pollworkers and local boards of elections. For example, the most recent issue includes Election Day reminders, election vocabulary, information about voting systems, and an update from the Secretary of State. This newsletter has helped to build a community of pollworkers and to keep pollworkers informed and engaged in the off season. For more information about pollworkers in Ohio visit PEOinOhio.com.

Virtual “I Voted” Sticker

As of the March 6, 2012 Primary, voters could get a virtual “I Voted” sticker to “wear” on their Facebook wall. The Secretary’s Facebook page highlights Secretary Husted’s initiatives, information for military voters, and information on how to become a precinct election official. The sticker was designed and selected through an online “Elect Your Sticker” campaign on the Secretary’s website.
