EAC 2010 Military Heroes Initiative Grant
In FY 2009 and FY 2010, Congress provided funds to the EAC to develop a research program to continue to support accessible voting technology. In September 2010, EAC awarded a $500,000 grant to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) to research the needs of recently injured military personnel with regard to the federal election process. This initiative was developed by EAC and the Department of Defense Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP).
On Tuesday, July 24th, ITIF hosted an event to provide an overview of their research on making voting accessible for disabled veterans. The presentation was held at the Russell Senate Office Building. This event focused on a discussion of the barriers that exist for disabled service members and ways to improve voting access for them.
Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia opened the discussion, which was followed by presentations from Brad Fain, Technical Director, Expeditionary Medical Facility Human Systems Integration; and Carol Paquette, Board Secretary, Operation BRAVO Foundation. The discussion was moderated by Daniel Castro, Senior Analyst, ITIF. The event concluded with remarks by Congressman Ron Barber of Arizona.
EAC will review the recommendations and determine implementation strategies, and we hope others will do the same. If you have additional questions, please comment below; or contact Jessica Myers at jmyers@eac.gov or via Twitter (@EACgov).
